In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel like we’re always chasing something—peace, success, closure. I have always had an interest in new gadgets or devices. I still remember how excited I was when I got my second phone. That evening, I was so thrilled I almost forgot about dinner! Thanks to my mom, I didn’t, but after dinner, when I took my phone again and started exploring what was new on it, our dinner time was 8:30 PM. When I was finally ready to sleep that night, it was 2 AM! I never knew when the time flowed by. And I’m a sleepy person; I never stay up that long.

I remember the same feeling with the thriller mystery series 3AM by Nick Pirog. Or, I can tell you about an in-class assignment that had to be completed in exactly 50 minutes. I was so sure my team and I could do it because, normally, 50 minutes in that class felt so long. But that day, when we started working on the assignment, when the 50 minutes were gone, my team members and I didn’t even have a clue where the time went. (FYI, we finished that assignment, but it took an extra 3 minutes.)

You know that feeling, right? Whether you’re deeply engrossed in a hobby, lost in a good book, or even tackling a challenging work project, there are moments when time seems to melt away. You’re completely immersed, ideas connect effortlessly, and the outside world fades into the background. That, my friend, is the “zone” – a state of effortless engagement and peak concentration. For the first 30 minutes, my mind still tried to wander. But I gently pulled it back each time. Suddenly, I looked up and realized over an hour had flown by. I felt energized, my thoughts were clear, and the outline was done. It wasn’t about willpower as much as it was about creating the space for focus to emerge. It felt less like ‘work’ and more like playing a complex, engaging game.

Oh, one more thing: Choose your environment intentionally. I love working with natural light, so I sit near a window in daylight or use lighting that mimics it at night. You don’t need expensive gear—just the things that help you feel grounded and focused.

During your focus time, your main goal is undivided attention. But during your breaks, it’s okay to socialize, move around, or enjoy a coffee. Just be mindful not to get swept back into distraction mode.

Cultivating deep focus isn’t about being rigid or punishing yourself. It’s about respecting your attention, understanding how your mind works, and creating the conditions for your brain to do its best work – or simply enjoy its leisure time more deeply. It’s a muscle that gets stronger with practice. Each intentional choice to focus, however small, brings you closer to a more productive, creative, and fulfilling life.
